About Coach Jen

For me life and sport have always gone hand in hand. Sports and fitness have always been a part of my lifestyle and as a teacher and a coach nothing brings me more joy than to see athletes I work with experience the joy and satisfaction that comes with meeting and exceeding their goals. My history in endurance sports was a natural one – I grew up swimming, biking, and running in the Caribbean before moving to California. As I’ve grown in life and sport I’ve never lost my passion for training, having fun, making friends, and finding events to try. Fast forward to today where I’ve made my hobby my career, gone to grad school, teach college, and work educating other coaches, and this has become a career and lifestyle I actually never imagined I’d be doing. I  was really that bookworm Anthropology undergrad digging in the dirt and hoping to be a park ranger leading nature hikes one day (LOL!). So yes, it was back to school for me – thank goodness I LOVE what I do!!

Now people ask me, don’t you ever get tired of it?? And I always say ‘heck no!!!’. Let’s face it, our sport is experiencing a ‘boom’ like I’ve never seen before. We’ve grown since my first days in the sport when most people would ask ‘what are you doing? ….really all in one day?…..how long????…women do this too???…and of course, the kicker…..why?”. My why is because this sport has challenged me like no other in the most physical, mental, and visceral way while simply put – helping me become a better human.  Our sport is now mainstream where you will see the average person chugging along next to professionals, movie stars, retired athletes, and even politicians who each share the common goal of making it to the the finish line and doing their best in that moment. Because no matter what level we are at we are all hoping, dreaming, and ‘tri-ing’ together, right? It is my hope to not only be a resource for athletes, but an inspiration too and educate athletes on the history of our sport, on the current state of how things ‘really work, and keep them motivated for the future. As an athlete you are experiencing an amazing time of growth where there are literally tons of ‘coaches’ to choose from, apps, programs, articles, social media guru’s, arm chair plans and advisor’s, etc. (you get the picture). This has really challenged the everyday triathlete to be more savvy, sophisticated, and educated on what really works and what doesn’t. My bottom line, this sport has brought me so many experiences both good and challenging, heart filling and heart breaking, but really just living my best life filled with so much joy, fun, friendships, and adventures that I hope I can share with you. So, buckle up, hang on, and let’s get going for one fun, wild ride!

Coaching Philosophy

My personal coaching mission statement is basic and focused on a foundation of the following:

To provide each athlete with the appropriate tools, guidance, experiences, and emotional support they need to help define, set, and achieve their goals.  As a coach I believe my role is to not only help educate athletes in the goal setting and training process, but to also encourage them to train smarter and strive to reach new goals in a healthy balanced way.  I am not an ‘arm chair coach’ who just sits at my desk, but one that really loves to both talk to, see, and train with the athletes I work with. Over the past eighteen years of my teaching, training, and coaching career I have learned that really getting to know who the people I work with are and what makes them tick and really, just caring about more than the bottomline (ie. finishline or time) has led to some truly remarkable performances and lasting friendships. My goal is to help develop athletes confidence and enjoyment of sport so they are not only reaching their goals but are eager and motivated to pursue new ones, both on and off the start line. Central to my philosophy as a coach is getting to know each athlete personally and helping them find positive ways to reach their goals in a stimulating, fun, and supportive athletic environment. Most of all I hope to help athletes enjoy their journey of lifetime fitness through the endurance sports lifestyle and have a bit of fun while doing it. Triathlon is a crazy, cool, sport and I’ve personally enjoyed many years of meeting amazing new people, traveling to cool new places, and having lots and lots of fun together! Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions or if you’d like to chat.

As always….Enjoy your training and the ride~

Jenny
